FAQ - What is the difference in PTO and EIB?

PTO vs. EIB

At Children's of Alabama (COA), employees are provided with PTO (paid time off) that can be used to request time off from work.

PTO is usually measured in hours and is classified for different types of absences such as sickness, personal time, and vacation time. It is important to note that PTO differs from other types of leave such as maternity, FMLA, furlough, unpaid, or other government- or state-mandated leave.

EIB (also known as extended illness bank or extended illness benefits) provides limited income protection during extended periods of personal illness, hospitalization, or injury. However, not all companies offer this type of paid time off.  EIB plans are most commonly available in healthcare and government organizations.
